Quick answer: in 2026, daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1 in the United States and on Sunday, October 25 in Europe. Clocks go back one hour, so you gain an hour of sleep.

2029Sunday, March 11Sunday, November 4Sunday, March 25Sunday, October 28
2030Sunday, March 10Sunday, November 3Sunday, March 31Sunday, October 27

These dates follow the standard rules below. Governments can change them, so check an official source if your plans depend on it.

How the rules work

  • United States: daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Clocks change at 2:00 a.m. local time.
  • Europe and the UK: it starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October. In the EU the change happens at the same moment everywhere, 01:00 UTC.

"Spring forward, fall back"

In spring you move clocks forward an hour and lose an hour of sleep. In autumn you move them back and gain one. That is why the phrase is "fall back" for the change that ends daylight saving time.

EST versus EDT

Eastern Standard Time (EST) is UTC−5, and Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) is UTC−4. When daylight saving ends, the East Coast switches from EDT to EST. The same pattern applies to Central (CST and CDT), Mountain (MST and MDT) and Pacific (PST and PDT) time.

Who does not change the clocks

Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, as do US territories such as Puerto Rico. Most of Asia and Africa, including India, Japan and China, do not use daylight saving time either.

Why the gap between the US and Europe changes

Because the US and Europe switch on different dates, the time difference between cities like New York and London is 4 hours instead of the usual 5 for a few weeks in spring and for about a week in autumn. If you schedule international calls around those dates, check them with the time zone converter.

Will the clock changes end?

Proposals to stop changing clocks, or to make daylight saving time permanent, have been discussed in the US and in Europe. As of this writing the seasonal schedule above still applies.

Practical tips

  • Phones, computers and most smart devices update by themselves. Ovens, some cars and older clocks need changing by hand.
  • Use the weekend as a buffer: the change always happens on a Sunday morning.
  • Put a city name, not just a time, in meeting invites, so calendars convert correctly.
