The rule: fourth, not last

Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, which is not always the last one. In some years November has five Thursdays, and the holiday falls a week before the last one. In 2028, for example, Thanksgiving is on November 23, while the last Thursday is November 30.

A little history

Presidents proclaimed national days of thanksgiving in the 19th and early 20th centuries, usually for the last Thursday of November. In 1941 Congress fixed the holiday on the fourth Thursday, and it has stayed there since.

Black Friday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, so it always falls on a Friday between November 23 and November 29. Cyber Monday follows on the Monday after that weekend.

Canadian Thanksgiving

Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October, which is a different date and a different tradition from the American holiday.
